Poe Square
Alright, the Ed & Edgar blog is back now, too. I have lots of posts lined up for this week, including an answer to Jill Lepore's Griswoldian attack on Edgar Allan Poe in last week's New Yorker magazine. Ooh, I'm still burned up about that one.
I'll also be posting back and forth on this blog and the Bibliothecary blog, so come on by for lots of literary goodies, Edgarian and otherwise. On to today:
The folks in Boston are really getting their act together in honoring Poe. Paul Lewis manned up and participated in the Great Poe Debate. Then, he hosted a first rate birthday celebration in January. Now Boston is dedicating a square near Boston Common to honor the author. Paul Lewis will be speaking at the event. More info here:
Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino officially will designate the intersection of Boylston Street and Charles Street South, off Boston Common, as Edgar Allan Poe Square - in honor of the bicentennial anniversary of the author's 1809 birth in Boston - at a ceremony on Monday, April 27 at 11 a.m.
And here's Poe himself at the square ready for his long overdue (165 years overdue) honor:

I made it to the Poe Square dedication today - small crowd (mostly reporters and word didn't seem to get out until the last minute). I found it ironic that the dedication was made on the anniversary of Ralph Waldo Emerson's death. Coincidence? Irony? If my photos came out well, I'll post them to my own blog later today or tomorrow.
